Article by Spencer Lee

(#PALM #DESERT) -- It was only minutes before kickoff last Saturday night against the four-time champion San Diego Thunder when SoCal Coyotes head coach J. David Miller gathered his young troops and furiously implored them that “four or five plays will be the difference,” and that “close games against championship teams come down to who makes the fewest mistakes.”

Sadly, the Hall-of-Fame coach was right on both counts -- and it came at the expense of another all-world performance by Coyotes receiver Rashad “The Franchise” Roberts, as the Thunder rallied from a 17-0 deficit to win a wild 44-34 shootout at Xavier College Prep.

The SoCal defense surrendered only two long touchdowns – a 56-yard run and a 63-yard pass – but when combined with 150 yards in penalties that led to critical San Diego first downs, it was too much to overcome for the record-shattering Roberts, who turned in an eye-popping 294-yard receiving performance.

Despite the outcome, the deafening home crowd got their money’s worth.

SoCal quarterback Nate Lewis, who finished the night 28-43 for 514 yards and three scores, put on a Silver Stretch, Run ‘n’ Shoot clinic for most of the game, and completed passes to nine different receivers.

The Coyotes scored on their first three possessions, easily jumping to a 17-0 lead. After S-back Nigel Simmons turned a screen pass into a 39-yard score, the Coyotes defense held, and Lewis capped a second drive with an easy post-corner to Roberts.

Lewis had the Coyotes marching for another apparent score when a simple mistake would change the game. A Lewis pass bounced high into the air off the shoulder pads of his wide-open receiver at the San Diego 22, and two plays after the ensuing interception, the veteran Thunder scored on a momentum-killing 56-yard touchdown run.

“We teach our receivers every day to catch the ball ‘in the noose’ – that nothing good happens when you catch it off your pads,” said Miller. “It’s too bad we had to prove it. That was a 14-point swing that took us from a good night to a gun fight.”

By halftime, the Thunder held a 20-17 lead, and the second half was a see-saw war. Lewis kept the gritty Coyotes in the game with strikes to Kevin Page and Wayne Jacobs that led to a slashing two-yard touchdown by Simmons, and kicker Dan Kelly answered a San Diego field goal with a 32-yarder of his own.

The Coyotes seemed to gain back momentum and had the Thunder pinned deep in their own territory on third and 31 – only to give up a back-breaking 49-yard pass that would ultimately lead to another San Diego touchdown. “Mistakes killed us,” said Miller. “On that drive alone, we gave up 55 yards in penalties.”

The inimitable Rashad Roberts , meanwhile, was downright dazzling. Catch after catch, “The Franchise” skied high for critical first downs with sensational acrobatic stabs. Then, with the game on the line, the clutch Roberts outraced a San Diego corner for a perfect 80-yard rainbow from Lewis that pulled the Coyotes to within 37-34 with just under two minutes to play.

But the Coyotes, who were out of timeouts, barely lost the onside kick.

The Thunder, who had two players ejected during the contest and had another player hurl a ball into the SoCal Coyotes grandstand, ended the game with a 35-yard meaningless touchdown.

The Coyotes (1-1) will travel to Pasadena this weekend for a showdown with the California Tide.

Dickie O'Neal's Irish Pub Restaurant Palm Springs - Coyotes Light Up Home Opener 44-0

Coyotes Light Up Home Opener 44-0

(PALM DESERT) — The bumper-to-bumper traffic snaking from the I-10 corridor off Cook Street toward the bright lights of Xavier College Prep made it clear the valley was ready for the 2013 debut of their desert champion SoCal Coyotes against the San Diego Spartans.

Once inside, a standing-room only crowd of 2,231 couldn’t wait to see how the vastly improved Coyotes would fare against the steep competition in the Southern California Football Alliance, one of the nation’s most prominent AAA conferences among 800 teams.

For the Coyotes, however, the results looked strikingly familiar — a devastating 44-0 whitewash of the Spartans, behind a blistering demonstration of the quick-strike Silver Stretch Run ‘n’ Shoot offense and a Darkside Defense that legally should come with its own ambulance.

As a worldwide radio audience listened live on Team 1010 KXPS, the Coyotes ripped into the Spartans, rolling up 501 yards in total Silver Stretch offense behind four touchdowns from quarterback Nate Lewis.

The former 2012 National Player of the Year completed 24 of 34 for 321 yards, with 11 of those going to All-American Rashad “The Franchise” Roberts for 176 yards and two scores. Former Arena Football stars Kevin Page and AJ Allen each added two more scores from Lewis.

But the real story was the entire Darkside Defense, who humbled San Diego by only allowing them across the 50 twice, and inside the 30 once. The Coyotes brought devastating waves of pressure that sent Spartan helmets flying, jaws popping, and hitting so fierce that Spartans runners seldom ventured past the line of scrimmage.

Former NCAA preseason All-American defensive end Devin Howard was a relentless, disruptive force, to the point that San Diego tried countless blocking schemes — two tight ends, a fullback, traps, draws, and double-teams – to slow him. Nothing worked. Howard spent the entire night in the Spartans backfield, which created opportunity for chinstrap-popping linebacker Devin Jones, who led all tacklers with 16.

Defensive end Jason Franek blocked the first punt of his career and scored the first defensive touchdown in SoCal Coyotes history.

Kicker Dan Kelly converted all five PATs, and connected on field goals of 45, 39 and 48 yards.
For the Spartans, it could have been much worse. The Coyotes left 34 points on the field: A 26-yard touchdown run by rookie running back Nigel Simmons was nullified by holding; three different receivers dropped touchdowns in the end zone; and Kelly missed from 51 and 46.
Simmons still led all rushers with 34 yards.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said head coach J. David Miller, who picked up the 75th victory in his Hall of Fame career. “We played no preseason games, so we were rusty. It’s behind us, and now we turn our attention to the Thunder. There are no days off in this league.”

The Coyotes have a bye week, then return home to Xavier against the San Diego Thunder on September 7.

SOCAL COYOTES (1-0) VERSUS SAN DIEGO THUNDER (1-0)

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, XAVIER COLLEGE PREPARATORY, 7:05 PM

(PALM DESERT) – The SoCal Coyotes will ‘Defend the Shield’ – and their 1-0 record – this Saturday night at Xavier College Prep against the former four-time champion San Diego Thunder in a Southern California Football Alliance (SCFA) showdown that promises to test the backbone of both teams.
KICKOFF: Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.  Gates open at 5 p.m. Teams take the field at 6 p.m.
LAST WEEK:  Both teams recorded impressive shutout home victories last week.  The Thunder tamed the Las Vegas Lions 50-0, while the Coyotes speared the South Bay Spartans, 44-0 before a record sell-out crowd of 2,231 fans. The Coyotes have added a half-dozen traffic officers for quick parking and stadium entrance.
WEATHER:  Palm Desert forecast calls for partly cloudy and 95 degrees at kickoff, with no chance of rain.
GENERAL SEATING: Walk-up tickets are available at the gate. General seating means get there early.
BRING THE FAMILY: The SoCal Coyotes are a family friendly environment, with activities for children and a secure perimeter for parents. The Coyotes strictly enforce zero tolerance for alcohol or drug use, as well as any threats of violence.  Coyote security is led by a detail of active undercover law enforcement.
RADIO: Play-by-play will be called by “Voice of the Coyotes” Matt McKay and aired on KXPS Team 1010, the flagship station of the Coyote Radio Network. The game can also be heard via the Coyote Mobile YAPP, available for free download in the n iTunes Store and Android Market.
HEAD COACHES:  San Diego head coach Derrick Johnson is the winner of four league championships. SoCal is led by AAA Hall-of-Fame head coach J. David Miller is 75-15 (.840) and was named the 2012 National Coach of the Year when the Coyotes won the Pac West title.
WHEN THE COYOTES ARE ON OFFENSE: Fans flock to see the Coyotes Silver Stretch offense, a potent Run ‘n’ Shoot attack that floods defenses with a fleet of the nation’s fastest receivers -- all sub-4.4. First-time fans immediately notice speed, speed and more speed, with every Coyote receiver a threat to score once they touch the ball.
Make no mistake: The Coyotes love the vertical deep ball. All-American receiver Rashad “The Franchise” Roberts, (College of the Desert) from Atlanta, Ga., holds virtually every Coyote career receiving record. He turned in another stunning performance against the Spartans with 11 catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Former Arena Football standouts Kevin Page (Glenville State) had five catches for 90 yards, and A.J. Allen (Central Arkansas) had three catches for 45 yards and a score. Wayne Jacobs (New Mexico Highlands), arguably the fastest Coyote, had 24 yards on four receptions.
Rookie S-back Nigel Simmons (College of Sequoias) showed flashes of brilliance in training camp with a punishing combination of size (6-1, 230) and speed. Pushing Simmons is Deshawn Smith (Eastern Oregon), a situational back with game-breaking speed.
PULLING THE TRIGGER: Former Cathedral City star Nate Lewis (Dixie State) has blossomed into one of the most dominant quarterbacks in AAA football history. Running the Coyotes no-huddle attack from the line of scrimmage, the 6-5, 230-pound gunner was 28 of 38 for 376 yards and four touchdowns against the Spartans, with an NFL passer rating of 117.87. His long-ball accuracy leaves little margin for error, and why the San Jose Sabercats kept him to the final cut this spring in the Arena Football League.
The Coyotes have thrown the ball as many as 61 times in a single game. Lewis’s single-game high is 574 yards and seven TDs (versus Las Vegas Cobras, 2012). Lewis has thrown two touchdowns out of his own end zone; 97 yards to Rashad Roberts (versus San Diego Thundercats, 2012); and 98 yards to former Coyote Mondo Delgado (versus Las Vegas, 2013).
WHEN THE THUNDER HAS THE BALL: The SoCal ‘Darkside Defense’ is loaded with talent. The middle is anchored by veteran nose tackle and Coyote Defensive Player of the Year Cedric Cox (6-1, 325, Florida State), who had three solo tackles against the Spartans. The real fun for the Coyotes, however, starts on the outside with former NCAA Preseason All-American Devin Howard (6-3, 285, New Mexico Highlands), a speed-rusher with tremendous inside strength that has been compared to J.J. Watts. Howard had three solo tackles, five assists and a half sack, and harassed the entire South Bay offense from the opening snap.  Big Dan Lopez (6-4, 285, College of the Desert) pinched the other end with four solo tackles.
At linebacker, captain Devin Jones (Southeast Louisiana) had eight solo tackles, three assists and a pass deflection in the impressive home opener, as the former Bayou Bowl MVP dominated with thunderous hits and field leadership. David “The Diesel” Cathcart (Mt. San Jacinto), switched back to his natural position at inside linebacker, answered with a sack, two solo tackles and a blocked field goal.
Former Coyote Man of the Year Jordan Cornell (Cathedral City, 6-3, 265) had two solo tackles, 2 assists, and a sack and a half. Dana Prieto (Palm Springs High) had two solo tackles, two assists, and defensed two passes.  Bryan Garcia (Palm Springs High) had two assists.
The Coyotes secondary is the strongest in history.  All-American strong safety Bo “Night Train” Bovain had four solo tackles and two assists. NFL prospect Shaine Boyle (Faulkner University) picked off one pass , nearly had another and had two solo tackles. Shutdown corner Chris Kelly (Reedley College) had an interception and two tackles, including a facemask-rattling open-field stop. Newcomer Ryan Pervine (College of the Desert), who had a sack, two tackles and broke up a pass, is a raw sleeper with the ability to take over a game.
FRANEK PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ageless Jason Franek (Hemet High School, 6-3, 220) had one solo tackle, two assists, a punt block, two fumble recoveries and scored the first defensive touchdown in Coyote history, all in spite of being 34 years old. Franek earned the SWAT Fuel Special Teams Player of the Week.
DAN THE ‘ICE’ MAN: The Coyotes, who only have only punted nine times in 20 games, recorded their 11th game without a punt. but proved fearless with the new addition of long-ball kicker Dan Kelly, the fourth all-time leading scorer at the University of Hawaii. Kelly hit from 45, 39, and 48 yards, while barely missing from 51 and 46.
COYOTE QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Going over the middle against Devin Jones is like swimming in the ocean with an open wound. Sooner or later, the shark is going to find you.” – Head coach J. David Miller.
