Dickie O'Neal's Irish American Pub Restaurant debuts Lucky Tongue LIVE to the Saturday Night Live lineup of music acts.

Lucky Tongue was formed in 2006, first playing in rural pubs in North Idaho. The band, comprised of a father, Blaine, and his two sons, Dylan & Blade, quickly caught on fire. They had a distinctive magical influence that left the audience spell bound. Soon they were being booked at venues in venues in Seattle and Portland.

The band was then signed on by the Beyer agency in Las Vegas. There they enjoyed a short season of regular work sharpening their skills before leaving for Southern California, where the beach was accessible for surfing and the environment was condusive with creativity.

Recently the men received an invitation by Sir #Paul McCartney to visit him before his concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Backstage he paid homage to the bands respect to him and the music of the Beatles. Lucky Tongue is presently mastering their original CD entitled "King Munster's Last Dream ".

They have gone back to the roots of #Rock N Roll adding the energy of youth while surprising the audience of the world. The old classics of the 60's are played with such profound dynamics that the reform of that generation is revisited in the hearts and minds of listeners from age 20 to 70.

When this band rips into the song "Stepping Stone" by the #Monkees, the tambourine isn't the only thing shaking, but the heart of the flower child within each one of us. The audience is then mesmerized and dumbfounded as to why they ever compromised by listening to modern country music! The power of the music; the power of the #60s, the power of rock - is all that is needed to break the spell and bring them back home to what they are longing for.

If you have heard enough schizophrenic music by other bands desperately grasping for something new, then you will find sanctuary in the sounds of Lucky Tongue.
Lucky Tongue performs LIVE at Dickie O'Neal's Irish American Family Pub Restaurant in Palm Springs California - December 21 2013.

Dickie O'Neal's Irish Pub Recipes - Grammy Rose's St. Columba's Biscuits

Grammy Rose's St. Columba's Biscuits

Dickie O'Neal's Irish American Family Pub Restaurant's homemade biscuits come from my Grammy's recipe.  Grammy made these biscuits because they were easy, and cheap to make.  During WWII, my Grammy would donate biscuits to impoverished church members that relied on the church to feed families during this time period.

With the amount of biscuits that were made,  my Grammy used a premix of Bisquick, (since eggs and oil were a luxury at that time).

Enjoy the taste of this biscuit recipe!

Total Time:  23 minutes
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time:  8 minutes
Yields: 20
4 1/2 cups Bisquick
1 1/3 cups orange juice
2 teaspoons sugar
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Melted butter, for brushing
Preheat oven to 450°F.

Mix the Bisquick, buttermilk and sugar together in a bowl.

Add the melted butter into the batter.

Stir until a soft dough forms.

Turn out onto a well floured work surface.

Knead 20 times (this is a very forgiving dough), and don't be afraid to get additional flour into the dough.

Roll 1/2 thick, or thicker if you prefer towering biscuits.

Cut out into 2" rounds (or your preferred size).

Place close together on an ungreased baking sheet.
Brush tops with melted butter.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes; I usually find 8 minutes is enough.
When you remove the biscuits from the oven, brush the tops with melted butter again.

A little bit of local knowledge goes a long way - and with this in mind, we at Dickie O'Neal's Irish Pub in Palm Springs have prepared a brief guide to vacationing in Ireland.

Although remember - if you really want to fit in with the locals, you might want to avoid expressions like "vacationing" - use "going on holiday" instead.

You might also want to include the expression, "Where are yar' lucky charms?" in as many conversations as possible - the Irish will surely love you for that. (Note the sarcasm here...)

Driving

Don't go onto the roundabout (traffic circle) the wrong way round.

The rule is you enter to your left, and give way to traffic from your right.

And it’s petrol, not gas.

Not going to Northern Ireland
There’s really no excuse not to go to Northern Ireland. Even if you only have a few days, it’s still worth a visit, and Belfast is only a little over two hours away from Dublin by train. Derry (also called Londonderry) is worth checking out – especially at Halloween, when the entire city dresses up in costume.

Visiting Dublin – and only drinking in Temple Bar
Temple Bar is  Dublin’s cultural center just south of the River Liffey. It has plenty of museums, stores, bars and restaurants. But all this is best left for the day time – at night, it becomes considerably less attractive. If you are looking for a good night out, try any number of the bars along Camden Street. George’s Street and Wexford Street.

Not going to a hurling or Gaelic football match
Hurling is sometimes described as a cross between lacrosse and hockey, but that doesn’t really do the sport any justice because it is unlike any other sport in the world. It’s well worth going to see a game – and the same goes for Gaelic football, which looks like a cross between soccer and rugby.

The best time to see these games is during the summer when the season's just getting going. It gets increasingly difficult to get tickets towards the end of the season. Dublin’s Croke Park, the main GAA stadium is Ireland, includes a museum that explains the evolution of Ireland’s native sports.

Forgetting to claim your tax back
Taxes are generally already added into the cost of most goods and services in Ireland. As a tourist, you are eligible to reclaim this tax back at the airport – just remember to keep your receipts.

Deciding you don't need a map or a GPS locator
Ireland is notoriously difficult to navigate with signposts often impossible to find. Map vital, GPS essential.

Being afraid to ask for directions

Get used to it guys. In Ireland you will need to drop the shyness and the macho outlook and ask.

Using a fake Irish accent

Irish people hate it when Yanks or anyone for that matter try it on. Not recommended.

Expecting only warm weather

Big mistake, no matter what the forecast says, rain can happen at the drop of a, well raindrop, very unpredictable and sometimes annoying.

HISTORY-MAKING, 'PRIDE OF THE DESERT' COYOTES BILLBOARD GREETS PALM SPRINGS TRAVELERS ON I-10 CORRIDOR

(PALM SPRINGS) -- The SoCal Coyotes continued to set the standard in AAA football Wednesday night when travelers going east on the I-10 corridor at the Highland Springs and 22nd exit were greeted by a full-size billboard introducing the 2012 Pac West champions as "The Pride of the Desert."

The billboard invites football fans pouring into Greater Palm Springs to "Defend the Shield" of faith, family and football, and prominently features 6-6, 230-pound Coyotes quarterback Nate Lewis, who is shattering AAA records for his third consecutive season.

"If you think Nate towers over a defense, wait until you see him overlooking an interstate," smiled team president J. David Miller. "We are humbled, and grateful, that God has given us the amazing platform of football to share eternal principles of faith and family with the world."

The SoCal Coyotes are a non-profit sports leadership organization that places as much emphasis on building men as it does building champions. This is the first of three Coyote billboards that will appear on the Palm Springs landscape.

"We view our 53-man roster as 53 opportunities to plant trees under whose shade we never intend to sit," Miller said. "Each man on this team represents an opportunity to learn values and skills that create better homes, better fathers, and ultimately, better communities wherever they go.

"And our fans think we're a pretty good football team, too," Miller added.

The Coyotes are currently 3-1 and in the thick of the national championship race in the Southern California Football Alliance, the desert's only means to win a state or national title.

The team returns home this Saturday night at Xavier College Prep to face the Crown City (Belmont) Hilltoppers at 7 p.m.

  1. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Los Angeles, and now finds itself as the opening act for the UFAL Champion California Raiders, who play the Las Vegas Lions in the second game.

The Coyotes are coming off a shocking road win against the heavily favored California Tide, where they rallied in Pasadena for a thrilling 40-29 comeback behind their third 500-yard-plus explosion of the young 2013 season, proving that their Mouse Davis-engineered Silver Stretch offense is not to be taken lightly.

Coyote All-American receiver Rashad “The Franchise” Roberts – who puts the ‘stretch’ in the team’s precision Run ‘n’ Shoot attack -- has a whopping seven touchdowns and – no, this is not a typo – 681 yards receiving in just three games.

KICKOFF: Kickoff is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at San Bernardino High School Stadium, 1850 NE Street, San Bernardino, CA. Gates open at 2 p.m. The Coyotes will take the field for team stretch one hour prior to kickoff.

LAST WEEK: The Coyotes drove the ball at will against the vaunted Tide, but turned it over twice in two possessions and found themselves trailing 21-19 at half, despite a huge 68-yard touchdown reception from receiver Demario Brown and an electrifying 91-yard kick return from Shaine Boyle. The sluggish Coyotes then ripped open the skies in the second half and rained down hell, with quarterback Nate Lewis throwing the length of the field to Roberts for two scores and another pair to Arena Football sensation Kevin Page.

WEATHER: The forecast for San Bernardino at kickoff is sunny and 82 degrees, with winds from the southwest at 11 miles per hour.

GENERAL SEATING: Walk-up tickets are available at the gate for $10. Children under eight are free. No coolers, or outside food or drink, are permitted inside the stadium.

RADIO: Play-by-play will be called by “Voice of the Coyotes” Matt McKay and aired on KXPS Team 1010, the flagship station of the Coyote Radio Network. The game can also be heard via the Coyote GoMobile YAPP, available for free download in the iTunes Store and Android Market. The YAPP also has the Coyote roster, videos, and Coyote TV features.

ORGANIZATIONS: The Los Angeles Falcons are under the direction of owner and investment banker Michelle Crenshaw, who has been a AAA football general manager for eight years with the Hudson County (NJ) Stars and Long Beach (CA) Lions. She is in her third season as an owner in the LCFL Central Division.

The Coyotes are led by AAA Hall-of-Fame head coach J. David Miller, who brings a record of 76-16 (.841) into the game. Miller's team was a 2012 national runner-up and he was named National Coach of the Year.

WHEN THE COYOTES HAVE THE BALL: When fearless veteran SoCal Coyote quarterback Nate Lewis – arguably the most accurate AAA passer in history – steps under center, one thing is certain: The Coyotes are a threat to score at any time, from any place on the field, including from their own one-yard line. In only three games, the Coyote gunner has staggering numbers: 76 completions for 1,292 yards and 12 touchdowns, with only six interceptions in 109 attempts.

Lewis, 6-5, 230, is now in his third season with Miller and the pure Run ‘n’ Shoot, evidenced by his supreme confidence and generalship. The 2012 National Player of the Year – who made it to the final cut this spring with the Arena Football League’s San Jose Sabercats – is completing 70-percent of his passes for an NFL passer rating of 123.337. And long-ball threat Rashad Roberts is just one of his weapons: In three games, Lewis has completed passes to 11 different receivers, and is confident in his entire fleet of sub 4.4 speedsters.

For two weeks in a row, once-skeptical SCFA coaches who came to scout Lewis left shaking their heads.

The Falcons are hoping pressure from veteran star defensive end John Henry (55) will create mistakes that their opportunistic defense, led by linebacker JR White (8), can exploit.

Lewis, however, who completed 20-28 last week for 402 yards, doesn’t make many mistakes, and when a defense does, he is swift to make them pay with strikes to targets like Josh Asuncion, Demario Brown, AJ Allen, Jordan Brewer, Wayne Jacobs, Deshawn Smith and Erick Ross.

Running back Nigel Simmons overcame an early fumble against the Tide to have his best day as a Coyote, with eight carries for 68 yards and an 8.5-yard average.

WHEN THE FALCONS HAVE THE BALL: The Darkside Defense’ is led by devastating middle linebacker Devin Jones, a ‘collision expert’ who leads the team in tackles. Speed-rusher Devin Howard – who has a team-leading six sacks – harasses quarterbacks into mistakes that feed opportunistic Coyotes like Ryan Pervine, Bo “Night Train” Bovain, Dana Prieto, Shaine Boyle, Sebastian Hall, Chris Kelly and Rob Smith.

Expect the Falcons to test the Coyotes secondary with explosive quarterback Anthony Andre, while pounding the SoCal defensive line behind the running of Davonte Green. Cedric Cox, Jason Franek, Dan Lopez, Jordan Cornell and Tyler Malone lead the way for the Coyotes up front.

"If Devin Howard were a grizzly bear, he'd live in Yellowstone Park," said Miller. "He throws offensive linemen around like dumpsters, and he keeps turning them over until he finds something to eat. That attracts a lot of other bears behind him looking for an easy meal, and we are blessed in the bear department."

The rich SoCal linebacking corps is its deepest in history, with David Cathcart, Greg Marshall, Bryan Garcia, Paul Thomas, Cory Westmoreland, Alex Mendoza, Robert Kelly and JuJuan Martin flying to the football.

DAN THE ‘ICE’ MAN: Kicker Dan Kelly missed from 49 in his only attempt last week. He hit from 32 and 49 two weeks ago against the Thunder. Kelly is perfect in PATs and has scored 30 points on the year. The Coyotes, who seldom punt, did not against the Tide, but net 41.2 yards on the season when they do.

    COYOTE QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
“That was like having our wisdom teeth removed -- with a chainsaw." -- Coyotes head coach J. David Miller, after his team squandered opportunities and trailed at halftime before putting up one of the best second-half performances in the SoCal Coyotes three-year history.

Chicken and Dumplings was created during the Great Depression: money was tight back then, and it's an excellent way to stretch ingredients so that the meal feeds a crowd. It's a simple and basic recipe that is economical and can be elegant as well. The dumplings are basically a biscuit dough that are dropped into boiling chicken stock.

Grammy Rose hints for the perfect drop dumpling for chicken and dumplings.
  • The secret to fluffy #dumplings is to keep them at a low simmer, never let them boil, and don't overcook them.
  • Use a wider topped pot, give them room to expand and when they look fluffy, test them with a toothpick as you would with a cake, to see if they are done.
  • Take care not to boil them or overcook them and you'll be happy with these drop dumplings.
Grammy Rose's Drop Dumplin' Recipe

2 1/4 cups Bisquick
3 Eggs
3/4 cup Milk
1 tablespoon Thyme
  • Stir together dumpling ingredients and drop by spoonfuls into simmering water.
  • Cook uncovered 8 minutes and 8 minutes covered.

THE PRESIDENT, BOYLE TURN BACK TIDE IN #COYOTE #COMEBACK

(#PALMSPRINGS) – When SoCal coaches looked at the game film Monday and compared it to the actual statistics, Saturday night’s stunning 40-29 road #win over the powerful #California Tide gave them reason to #hope, after the 2-1 Coyotes repeatedly came from behind to find a way to win.

“More ‘we,’ and less of ‘me,’” said head #coach J. David Miller. “The #guys who talk the least did the most. That was the difference. If we are to ever be #champions, we had to quit being talkers of great deeds and doers of none. Our season was on the line, and these young #men fought their way out of the darkness.”

Coyote coaches quickly pointed out two critical game-changing plays, one from wide #receiver Demario “The President” Brown; the second, from #rookie corner Shaine Boyle. Both occurred in a wild first half, where the deep Tide tried to drown the upstart Coyotes before they could gasp for air.

The visiting Coyotes started flat, evidenced by two drive-killing first-quarter turnovers and divisive sideline chatter. Brown had been benched briefly by Miller for a dropped pass, and the Tide seized their #opportunities – and the momentum – to jump to a 14-6 lead.

But when Brown re-entered th
e fray, #veteran #quarterback Nate Lewis calmly called his number with the Coyotes famed Choice route. Lewis quickly found the 6-1, 220-pound Brown in the flat, and the pride of Orangeburg, #South Carolina showed the Tide – and his head coach – that you can’t impeach the President.

Brown threw the corner to the ground with one hand, ran over a #linebacker, and then blasted through the tackle of a diving safety. With nothing but turf in front of him, Brown ran 68 yards to re-election and #redemption.

“That catch and run changed the game,” said Miller. “To that point, we couldn’t pour water out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel. Like the veteran #All-American that he is, Demario gave us hope.”

The Coyote bench burst to #life. “We are engineered for #comebacks!” roared veteran #defensive back Robert Smith to a sideline of rookies. “One #play can change the game!”

But the rushing Tide – no strangers to big games themselves -- answered swiftly. Behind pinpoint passing from star quarterback Kyle Parrish, the former champions marched into the teeth of the Coyote defense and #scored on a 27-yard pass to take a daunting 21-12 lead with barely two minutes left in the half.
The Coyote kick return team took the #field for its third time, and frankly, most of the bench was looking to deep return speedsters Rashad Roberts or Wayne Jacobs for an answer. But when the Tide squib-kicked to avoid them, it was cornerback Shaine Boyle who gathered up the bouncing ball at his own nine. Boyle ran right into heavy traffic, planted, and reversed his field. Finding nothing, he circled back again, this time nearing his own goal line.

Boyle then reversed again, but this time, began to pick up blocks as selfless Coyotes circled back to help the darting Boyle out of a deep hole. When he reversed a third time, suddenly, there was nothing but grass. By the time Boyle had crossed mid-field, “he had already run about 150 yards,” said Miller.

“At that point, we just #prayed he had another 50 left in the tank.” Miraculously, an exhausted Boyle crossed the finish line while the Coyote bench erupted into bedlam. When Miller turned on his team at halftime, his words were unforgettable. He swiftly pointed out that it was simple SoCal mistakes, ego and and selfishness -- not the Tide --that were trapping the young Coyotes. “Wake up! Wake up! Or you will cry tomorrow!” the coach screamed. “Make up your minds! You will either grow up, right here, right now, on the road, and be remembered as a team, or you will die alone tonight in a strange place as a group of faceless, nameless individuals!”The Coyotes responded, and it was a couple of well-known faces who answered Miller’s cry. After the opening second-half kickoff, the venerable Lewis dropped to throw, and stood fearless in the pocket while Rashad “The Franchise” Roberts broke free over the top. Lewis laced a 78-yard rope down the left sideline, Roberts never broke stride, and The SoCal Coyotes finally took a #lead they would never relinquish. SoCal’s Darkside Defense, bolstered by adjustments from assistant head coach Wayne Anderson, stiffened. Led by punishing tackles from linebackers Devin Jones and Ryan Pervine, ferocious quarterback pressure from ends Devin Howard and Dan Lopez, push from nose tackle Cedric Cox, and huge defensed passes from Dana Prieto, Sebastian Hall, Chris Kelly and Boyle, the Tide turned. This time, unlike in week two against the San Diego Thunder, the Coyotes kept their poise. Lewis ran the Silver Stretch offense with perfect precision, attacking the changing Cal Tide fronts with runs and screens to S-back Nigel Simmons before Kevin Page for a 15-yard scoring strike to make it 33-21. The Tide battled valiantly, but couldn’t score, and Lewis made it clear it’s a bad idea to give him back the ball. Within seconds, the 6-5, 230-pound gunslinger found the streaking Roberts again on a switch route up the seam for another 78-yard score, and in the blink of an eye, the Coyotes led 40-21. The jubilant Coyotes gathered afterward on the bus, where Miller applauded his young pack for a team #victory that saw us “finally take them Huggies off, and I must say, men, we look pretty good tonight in street clothes.” The bus nearly burst in raucous response. The Coyotes’ Silver Stretch run ‘n’ shoot attack accounted for 461 yards of total offense, 359 behind the relentless right arm of Lewis, who threw for five #touchdowns to bring his league-leading total to 12. Rashad “The Franchise” Roberts averaged 25 yards a catch – eight total, for 201 yards – and three scores. Nigel Simmons rushed eight times for 68 yards. Miller gushed over Boyle’s incredible kickoff return, no doubt a game-changer, but the coach surprised his team by awarding the game ball to Brown, who unbeknownst to many had quietly pushed through several weeks of personal #trials to rise above #adversity when everything was on the line to turn the game around. Again, the Coyotes roared their approval. “The President chose #action over distraction,” said Miller. “If we don’t score there, the Tide never lets us back in that #game. Demario never complains. He walks the walk, and let the end zone do his talking. Great players make great plays in great games. Demario made the play when we needed it most, which by the way, is a staple of his Coyote #career.” "We #love you, Mario,” smiled Roberts, as he gave Brown a huge embrace after the game. “You needed this. You showed us all something tonight. You make me #believe. Don’t stop. Way to keep the #faith.  The Coyotes travel to #LosAngeles Saturday night to face the Falcons in their second straight road game.
