Cab Company Offers Free Rides On St. Patrick's Day

What's St. Patrick's Day without a drink or two with close friend's and family?Pubs across the desert are packed with patrons ringing in the Irish holiday. The mood was festive at Dickie O'Neal's Irish Pub and Restaurant of Palm Springs.

So, what's the best part of St. Patrick's Day?"The beer," said Josh Downs.

Tiffany Chavez bought a glass of green beer, which is a Bud Light with green dye."I promised my brother he's all the way in Colorado, and I promised him that I would be at the Irish pub and I would drink a green beer for him," said Chavez.

The most popular item on the menu was of course corned beef and cabbage."Without corned beef and cabbage, it's not St. Patrick Day," said Helica Perez.Patrons also took extra precautions to be safe. Many of them walked to the pub rather than drive.Others are called cabs to pick them up.

Managers at Dickie O'Neal's said they would even go as far as to book patrons a hotel room if they determine the patron couldn't make it home."The cops are gonna be out tonight," said Joey Leffel, a co-owner of Dickie O'Neals.

"We have a partnership for $69 to reserve a room over at the Shiloh Inn, which is a block away.

"American Cab Co. is offering free taxi rides until 2 a.m.The cab will you up from any bar or restaurant in any of the nine cities in the Coachella Valley and take you to your home."Whether you're slightly impaired or you're over the limit or think you've had too much at all, we want to make sure people get home safe," said Andrea Carter, with American Cab Co.

But don't forget to have a great time.On St. Patrick's Day, everyone is Irish."Irish Mexican all the way," said Chavez.

Dickie O'Neal's pub makes it easy to eat, drink and toast the Irish

Dickie O'Neal's owner Michael Farber wasn't feeling very lucky last December when rain storms caused the roof of his Palm Springs pub to collapse.

Open for business for barely a month, he was forced to close.

While devastating, Farber saw it as an opportunity to make some tweaks and come back stronger.

“When we first opened, we noticed a couple of things that could have been done better,” he admitted.

“Restaurants don't often get a chance to take care of those little opening problems, but we did.”
If you're looking to raise a glass to St. Patrick tomorrow night and chase it down with some tasty grub, consider the newly reopened Dickie O'Neal's. The public house is getting a rare second chance to make a first impression. And that, you could say, is really the luck of the Irish.

Sitting below a portrait of the pub's namesake, Farber revealed the origin of the red-bearded mascot: “Dickie is a pure figment of my imagination.”

Figment or not, there are several portraits of Dickie scattered about the pub, designed by Joey Leffel, including a set she designed that could have been painted by Andy Warhol.

Farber pushed hard to get the building repairs completed by St. Patrick's Day — when everybody is at least a wee bit Irish. He made it by days, opening at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

“I wanted to give the cooks a couple of days to get back up to speed,” he said.

The menu — featuring recipes gleaned from “varied sources and taste-tested by the staff” — offers several traditional Irish dishes and others that have undergone Celtic makeovers, including:

St. Patrick's Corned Beef and Cabbage — slices of corned beef piled high over cabbage, boiled potatoes and carrots ($8.95).
Garnish Island Fish and Chips — deep-fried North Atlantic battered cod and fries, served with house made coleslaw and tartar sauce ($11.95).
Barryscourt Castle Shepherd's Pie, with bits of beef and/or lamb and garden vegetables in a savory gravy, topped with mashed potatoes and cheese ($8.95).
Bangers and Mash — sausages and mashed potatoes; a pub favorite across the British isles ($6.95).
The traditional dishes, along with burgers, chicken, salads and pizzas, all go down better with one of the eight beers on tap, including Guinness.

While Farber originally planned a larger St. Patrick's Day celebration at Dickie's, he's keeping things in perspective.

“We're happy to be open,” he said.”

Celebrating a grand re-opening on March 17, 2011, Dickie O’Neal’s Irish Pub is the place to get your Irish on this Palm Springs St. Patricks Day. Although currently open, the restaurant and pub wants to celebrate its renovation the Irish way by doing so on Saint Patrick’s Day.

Open daily from 7:00am to 2:00am, Dickie’s is a full service restaurant offering up such Irish specialties as corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash. Tuesdays offer two for one burger nights and Wednesday has been declared date night at Dickie’s with dinner and a movie for only $12.95 per person. Coming soon on Friday nights is Karaoke.

On St. Patrick’s Day however, Dickie’s will be giving away a 32 inch flat screen television. Must be present to win...but that won't be too hard.

Dickie O’Neal’s Irish Pub will be celebrating that special Irish day all day long and what a great opportunity to stop by and wish them well.
